Ownership of EV Chargers

For the MLPs that own EV charging stations in their territory, how many do you own and where are they located?

We own fourteen public level-2 FLO stations, three level-3 FLO stations, and four additional private stations at our light plant. The public stations are at two ball fields, a downtown parking lot, country club, Town Hall, and the front of our light plant.

We've gotten requests from the Town to add more stations at the country club, a new school, the library, etc., but we don't want to overextend our ability to manage EV stations. We've been lucky so far that we haven't had any issues with the stations, but I know that isn't the case for others. I'm curious what others are doing.

@Brianna Bennett Littleton owns three level-3 stations and eight level-2 stations. Locations include Town hall, Libraries, playground, Town Common, Toyota dealership, and our light plant office.

We also have had the Town request more stations and even had to take over grants they applied for. We analyze the existing charging data to determine the demand for new stations. Using the data to show the performance of each station is helpful in determining the need for more stations.

Has anyone created a document or policy for working with commercial and municipal customers with installing EV chargers? What model have you done regarding the whole process?

Replacement for Smart Charge Program

Hi All - GeoTab, who we worked with for a Smart Charge pilot program, has decided to disband the individual driver aspect to focus on fleets. MGED is in the process of looking for a replacement service to implement by the end of the year.

We're looking at different hardware, software, and MDM based programs that may be more effective than SmartCharge was for us. I'd be very interested in hearing what others are using / considering as a replacement for GeoTab's SmartCharge program. Thanks!

When we set up BL's demand response for EV chargers, we looked at what could we effectively do. Instead of controlling all of the hours, we targeted specifically the peak hours that we could/would hit. BL administered its own program during 2019 by calling peak events from looking at our load versus ISO's and giving credit to customers that participated. To be more effective with cost and how to decrease demand, in 2020 we joined MMWEC's Connected Homes program which uses the same platform that the self-administered program did. MMWEC's ability to administer for multiple MLPs gave economy of scale. It also allowed MMWEC to leverage their power supply desk to give all participants the ability to call peaks all year long.

The technology-neutral platform does allow you to pull in more devices than just EVs, which is something to consider.

EV Charging Service

Any members have service agreements with their municipal/town departments (or even commercial customers) to own and manage EV charging? If so, willing to share?

We're just starting to have conversations with commercial customers about MLP-owned EVSE versus the customers installing behind-the-meter. I'd be interested as well in any agreements that MLPs have with commercial and muni customers.
